Write a mystery story. Give us a puzzle worth solving and a few people who might be hiding something. Drop clues along the way, but do not make it too easy. Let the tension build and keep the reader guessing until the truth comes out.
Got something that really gets under your skin? This is your chance to say it out loud. Write a rant about whatever frustrates you. It can be funny, sharp, serious, or a little over the top. Just let your voice come through strong and real.

Submit the opening chapter of your novel. Introduce us to your main character and the world they live in. Start the story in a way that pulls the reader in and makes them want to keep going. Let your voice show from the first page.
Write a horror story that feels unsettling from the start. Let the mood build slowly or hit hard, but make the tension real. Focus on what creeps under the skin, not just what jumps out. Leave the reader with a feeling that lingers after the last line.
Write a true story from your own life. Choose one moment, one memory, or even one small detail that still stays with you. It does not have to be dramatic. Just be honest. Share what it meant to you and let the feeling come through in simple, clear words.

The fiction writing contests should contain clear guidelines of the type of writing that is accepted. Free fiction writing contests sometimes require a specific genre such as science fiction. The free online writing competitions listed are clear on what type of writing is required. If there are any restrictions on word count you should be aware of this. Contest announcements will contain any requirements that an author should be aware of.
Prior to entering a contest we recommend reading our latest blog which explains how to write for a contest and what steps to take.
The most common question we hear is how long should your contest entry be. Flash fiction is a popular form of writing. For these contests your goal is to tell a complete story using a specific amount of words. If a contest requires 100 words that should be the total in the body of your work, no more and no less. Normally the title is not included in the count.
Some writing contests do not have a word count requirement. For these contests we recommend keeping the word count to 5,000 words or less. Judges are not going to want to read a novel when a short story is requested. Understand longer pieces may not be as well received. Most contests will clearly state guidelines.
Have fun with the free writing competitions. Be creative. Try new things. Whether you win or lose, getting feedback and learning is the most important thing you can take away from these contests. Enjoy your free writing contests 2026.
